The Scarlet Pimpernel

The scarlet pimpernel of my garden in Kullu is without a doubt the Crimson sunbird (Aethopyga siparaja). Apart from its spectacular appearance, I have seen it chase a Shikra (Tachyspiza badia) away and then sit on the highest Deodar tree and sing paeans of praise about himself.

Fiercely protective about his territory, he has been on the Wisteria flowers ever since they started blooming five days ago. Quick on the wing, he can also take nectar by hovering like a hummingbird, but usually perches to feed.
